A word game where every tile counts down

A single-player word game for the browser, built with Phaser 3 and TypeScript and live at lexic.digital. Letters expire if you sit on them, so every turn is a trade-off between the perfect word and the tiles you are about to lose.

Lexic in a desktop browser at the start of a daily challenge: the board grid with its double and triple letter and word cells, the player's rack of seven wooden tiles along the bottom, and the score, turn and bag count top right.

What it needed to do

Lexic started as a question: what happens to a Scrabble-like game if the tiles do not wait for you? Each letter on your rack has a countdown that ticks every turn. Expire a tile and it is gone. Your rack gets shorter, the timers on new tiles get tighter as the game goes on, and the game ends when the rack is empty.

Everything else in the design pushes the same way. Consecutive valid words build a streak multiplier up to three times; an invalid word or an exchange resets it. A turn worth fifteen points or more earns an extra tile. Every five turns, two blocked cells appear next to your existing tiles and the board closes in.

What I built

A daily challenge. The board layout, tile draws and hazard spawns are all seeded from the date, so everyone plays the same game and can compare scores. An emoji scorecard is generated at game over for sharing.
The board. An infinite grid with pan and drag on mouse and touch, deterministic bonus cells (double and triple letter and word scores) placed by hashing the coordinates, and cross-word scoring for every word a placement completes.
Validation in the browser. Words are checked against the TWL06 tournament word list on the client, with no server round trip.
Scoring. Standard letter values, cell bonuses, length bonuses for five-letter words and longer, plus two points for each cross-word.
